1. Is Language & Literacy Academy for Learning free? Is there tuition or fees?

Language & Literacy Academy for Learning is a tuition-free public charter school. There is no tuition to attend, no scholarships required, and no fees associated with therapy services, transportation, or sports.

2. Do you provide therapy?

Yes! We have occupational, physical and speech therapists that work with us in the classroom and provide therapy throughout the day. All therapy is provided free of charge to eligible students.

3. Do you provide transportation?

Yes — we provide free transportation services in Polk County, both to and from school. We have 3 buses with bus stops in a central location. Availability of a stop will depend on where you live. Contact us to find out if we can provide a stop in your area.

4. Do you have a lunch program?

Yes, on school days we offer free breakfast and lunch for all students.

For students who bring their own lunches, we have refrigerators and microwaves available in each classroom.

5. Do you offer any after school programs?

Yes. Before care is available starting at 6:00am. There is a $6.00 fee per student per day.

We also offer after care from 3:30pm to 5:00pm, also with a $6.00 fee per student per day. All fees shall be paid at the end of every week.

6. What kind of sports are available for students?

Language & Literacy Academy for Learning students can participate in Special Olympics sports programs. Sports currently available include:

  • Football
  • Soccer
  • Basketball
  • Track and field
  • Cheerleading

Students practice during the school day, with games typically held on Saturday and Sundays.

7. What kind of curriculum is taught?

Our curriculum is specifically designed to build reading and math skills in students with special needs. Our teachers allow students to work at their own speed and offer additional time and support to complete their work.

8. Do we still take the state test?

Students do still take state tests, however, we provide all accommodations that are listed on the student’s IEP.

9. What is the teacher:student ratio?

We serve 18 students per classroom, with 2-4 staff members available. Supportive classes have a teacher:student ratio of 4:15.

10. Do you have counselors on campus?

Yes. We have guidance and mental health counselors available. Counseling services are provided free of charge.

11. Are there boundaries to attend the school?

Any eligible student may enroll, regardless of location. Our buses transport students in the Polk County area, but there is no restriction for students who are transported via personal vehicles.

12. Is there a dress code?

Yes. Our dress code is as follows:

  • Navy blue, khaki or black bottoms
  • Closed toe shoes must be worn at all times
  • School shirt (May be ordered here)

On Fridays, students can wear our spirit shirt (available for purchase at the school for $8.00) and may wear blue jeans with a $1 fee.

13. What is arrival and pick up time?

Our car line starts at 7:45am. Students are considered tardy at 8:15am. Car line in the afternoon starts at 3:15 to 3:30pm. School hours are 8am to 3pm, Monday through Friday.

14. Are you accepting applications?
